About Me

I'm a Dundee based artist originally from Paisley.  I received an NC and HNC in fine art from the Glasgow Metropolitan College and went on to study fine art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, graduating with an honours degree in 2011.

Annual holidays in the west coast of Scotland and France have heavily influenced the colours in my work and contributed to my appreciation of natural elements and shapes.  The main subject of my work is plant forms, which I photograph to use as a source of inspiration for my acrylic paintings.  I layer various elements from my photos to make compositions which generally focus on the silhouette of the form rather than finer detail.  I use bold colours to enhance the plant outlines and reflect the vibrancy of nature.  I use paint in a way that suggests bright light shining through foliage with gradients or small flecks of intense colour and this creates strong contrasts against the black plant silhouettes.

Influences: Gary Hume, Fiona Rae, Jim Dine, Beatriz Milhazes, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ellsworth Kelly, Rex Ray, Rory McEwen, Antoni Gaudi, Charles Rennie Macintosh...
